Due to specific state law, residents of New York that have questions about the anti-theft protection offer need to skip to our special New York Section.
-
I sent in my key registration form. Am I now automatically enrolled in the anti-theft protection offer?
-
No. There are a few additional steps required to properly validate anti-theft protection offers on applicable locks. You must register for the anti-theft protection offer within 15 days of the purchase of your lock. All of the information you need to register for the offer is included in the packaging. If you have additional questions later, please contact Kryptonite at letters@irco.com.

-
I just purchased a Kryptonite lock that has an anti-theft protection offer. How do I validate this offer?
-
Congratulations on your new purchase! Your anti-theft protection offer should give you additional peace of mind so that you can feel free out on the roads and trails, never worrying about when and where you will stop!
If you would like to send in the paperwork but have already discarded the package, or the shop didn't give it to you at purchase, here are the things you will need to do within 15 days after you purchased your lock. Send the following items to Kryptonite or its authorized representatives outside of the U.S (Canada, Germany and the UK only):
- Your completed Kryptonite Lock registration form (if you need a new one, please contact customer service at letters@irco.com)
- A copy of your itemized lock bill of sale
- A copy of your itemized vehicle bill of sale, or a dated and signed dealer appraisal reflecting market value (not including tax and accessories)
- Proof of bicycle or vehicle registration (if available, not required)
- A check or money order for the coverage on locks that require payment for the first year or to extend the offer for a maximum of three years.
If you live in New York State please refer to our New York residents' section for info on specific state laws.
If you have additional questions please contact Kryptonite at letters@irco.com.

-
I want to sign up for Kryptonite's anti-theft protection offer. Can I do this online?
-
Not at this time. Please refer to the registration form and instructions in your product package.
|
-
I'm filling out my anti-theft protection offer paperwork and it asks for a serial number. Where do I find this?
-
Kryptonite's locks do not have a serial number. This is a spot for the serial number on your bicycle or powersports vehicle. We are sorry for any confusion and we have changed our packaging to address this question in the future.
|
-
I just purchased a Kryptonite lock that has an anti-theft protection offer. But, I do not live in a country mentioned in the offer. Am I covered through the anti-theft protection offer?
-
At this time, Kryptonite only offers its anti-theft protection program for bicycles in the United States, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom. For powersports vehicles, the anti-theft protection program is only offered in the United States and Canada.
|
-
I do not have the bill of sale for my bicycle/powersports vehicle. What other proof of its value is acceptable to send in with the anti-theft protection offer registration form?
-
Your local bicycle or powersports dealer should be able to create an appraisal for you on their company letterhead. Have them sign it, keep a copy for yourself and send us the original with your form.
|
-
It is my understanding that you must have homeowners' insurance to take part in the anti-theft protection offer. What are the parameters?
-
We've heard that, too, but it just isn't true. Unlike other companies, Kryptonite does not require you to have homeowners', or any other insurance, to register for the anti-theft protection offer. Kryptonite covers the base purchase price of your registered item, excluding accessories and tax.
Should you have insurance, in most cases the insurance company will cover the total value of the item stolen. However, if they do not, we will pay the amount of your deductible
|
-
My bike/vehicle was stolen while locked with a Kryptonite lock, but I did not have an anti-theft protection offer. What do I do?
-
We are so sorry to hear about your loss. Please contact customer service because all of our products have a limited lifetime warranty; we want to talk to you about this.
|
-
Why do I need to send back a piece of the broken lock as part of my claim?
-
Our engineers inspect every single lock that comes back to Kryptonite. This is part of the process in making changes to products to make them even better. We value this information a great deal. We also need a piece of the lock back as proof of lock failure.
|
-
I live in New York and just purchased a Kryptonite lock with an anti-theft protection offer. Is there any change to how I register?
-
No. You register for the program just like anyone else.
|
-
I live in New York and own a Kryptonite lock. Am I still covered by Kryptonite's anti-theft protection offer?
-
Yes, but the offer is slightly different. Because of the New York State Law section 3446 of Chapter 187 of the laws of 1999, consumers purchasing Kryptonite U-lock and chains have an insurance program set up by Kryptonite. New York residents are now covered under a 1-year group insurance policy. The amount of the insurance policy will be the same as the amount of the anti-theft protection offer in other states (ie, New York Lock is $3,000). This policy is provided to you by Kryptonite free of charge, however it is not renewable. It is only good for one year.
|
-
Does Kryptonite not have confidence in its products in New York City anymore?
-
No! We create and manufacture the most innovative, effective locks on the street and we stand behind them 100%! The only reason there is a difference in the policy for New York residents is to comply with New York state law.
|
-
Which Kryptonite locks are covered by this insurance policy in New York State, but not in New York City?
-
The Evolution series, Evolution series 4, KryptoLok series, KryptoLok series 2 and Bike Trap are not covered in New York City but are covered in the rest of the state. The only locks that are covered in New York City are the appropriately named, New York series of locks.
|
-
If I bought my Kryptonite lock in New York State, but live in a neighboring state how am I covered?
-
If you do not live in New York State your anti-theft protection offer is exactly as stated on the packaging of your lock. There are no changes.
|
-
I live in New York State and have a valid anti-theft protection offer, which is about to expire. Can I add another year of coverage to my lock?
-
Unfortunately, you can not extend your coverage if you are a New York resident. We're so sorry about that! But, state law (Section 3446 of Chapter 187 of the laws of 1999) forced Kryptonite to change its anti-theft protection offer, which does not include an extension of the insurance policy past one year.
|
-
I live in New York, have registered for the anti-theft protection offer and had my bicycle/motorcycle stolen. Is there any change in the procedure for filing a claim?
-
We are sorry about your loss. There are no changes to the way you would file your claim. Please contact us and we will help you with the process. If you have any additional questions about Kryptonite's anti-theft protection offer in New York State please email us at letters@irco.com

Maintenance
-
What kind of maintenance does my Kryptonite key lock need?
-
We know you are either riding your bicycle around town, cruising down the highway on your steel steed or bombing around down some trails where your lock could pick up all kinds of grime. Lubing on a monthly basis should keep dust and grime in check and out of your cylinder. Lube ingredients need to include one of the following: Silicone, Graphite, Teflon or Paraffin. These are commonly found in bike or powersports shops. Spray or drip a few drops of lube into the cylinder, insert the key and make a few turns to work it in. You should be good to go so you can get back to your adventure.
|
-
I have a Kryptonite resettable combination lock and can't find the instructions for resetting it. How can I change the combination?
-
That's easy! Here is a list of our resettable combination locks and the instructions on how to reset the combination.
If your lock is not listed here, please contact customer service and we will be happy to help you.
|
-
Do keys ever need to be replaced?
-
Possibly. When used frequently your keys can wear out or become damaged, just like anything else. Check your keys for wear and tear at the same time that you lube your lock each month. Additional keys can be ordered from Kryptonite. In most cases, keys are shipped within one business day of the order.
|
-
I live in the city and need a motorcycle/scooter lock. What should I choose?
-
Urban areas are where you need to pay extra attention to motorcycle security. In the city you should use a heavy-duty chain, like the New York Fahgettaboudit or a top of the line U-lock (New York M-18) or disc lock (New York Disc Lock). Properly locking your vehicle is just as important as what you use.
|
-
Do all motorcycle locks offer the same amount of security?
-
Not all locks are created equal. Heavy duty chains, U-locks and disc locks are much more secure than a cable lock. Kryptonite has created a security rating system that will help you determine which lock is best for your needs. Refer to this system when talking with your powersports dealer about a new lock purchase.
|
-
Why should I choose a chain over a disc lock?
-
Provided you can secure the chain around both your vehicle and a stationary object, it will prevent both ride-away and lift-away theft. A disc lock will not prevent lift-away theft – yes, a motorcycle can be lifted away pretty quickly.
|
-
Do cable locks have an anti-theft protection offer?
-
Kryptonite's anti-theft protection offer is not available on our cable products. Cables offer deterrent protection only. This means that they will stop a crime of opportunity like someone taking an unlocked motorcycle or ATV for a joy ride and dumping it a few hours later. For the best protection, Kryptonite recommends using a chain or disc lock for powersports vehicles.
|
-
What are the important things to consider about the lock itself?
-
- Design features. Make sure that the design provides functional security, not some gimmick that just looks cool.
- Materials. The ideal steel is hardened against cutting yet maintains flexibility for ease of use. Kryptonite MAX-Performance Steel is used in the New York series and Evolution series 4 locks and is both hardened and flexible.
- Services. Learn about both the past performance of the lock and the manufacturer, making sure that both have a good track record. Things to ask your dealer about: warranties, anti-theft protection offers, lifetime key replacement, prompt key replacement (ask about Kryptonite's free keys) and, most of all, the customer service experiences at the manufacturer. At Kryptonite, when you buy one of our locks, we've just started our relationship with you and we hope it is a life-long one.
|
-
What else do I need to do after purchasing my lock and signing up for the anti-theft protection offer?
-
Go out and enjoy a ride! Your keys are automatically registered when you signed up for the anti-theft protection offer so you are good to go. Have a great adventure!
|
-
My new lock only came with two/three keys, but I would like to get a duplicate set. How do I do this?
-
It's fast and easy! If you have registered your key number or know the number, you can call or email us and we can help you get a new set of keys. If this is your first set of keys for this particular lock, you could be eligible for the Key Safe Program and get your first two replacement keys free.
Kryptonite ships most keys within one business day of receiving your order. If you'd like keys delivered the next day, we can assist you with that, too, for the additional overnight shipping fee. Please give us a call to let us know you need the keys right away. Do not email these requests. We would not want a technology glitch to keep you from getting what you need!
If you have already taken advantage of your free keys, please refer to our All about Keys section for complete details on replacement keys.

-

-
My key doesn't seem to work in my new lock very well. Are the keys or cylinder defective?
-
Your lock is not defective in any way, but do not force the key. It only takes a few practices to become comfortable with the disc-style cylinder keyway.
Due to the particular design of the disc-style cylinder the key must be inserted all the way into the cylinder before turning the key to unlock it. If it is not inserted the full distance into the cylinder do not force it! There is a risk that the key may break under the force of the twisting motion.
Take the time to make sure the key is all the way into the cylinder before turning the key. If the key becomes tight or 'sticky' remove the key and try again. If the key still feels the same, try the spare key.
If both keys have the same feel to you, please call us for replacement keys. Many times, the first pair of extra keys is free with our Key Safe Program. Ordering keys can be done in the Key section.

-
What is the difference between the KryptoLok DFS 10 Disc Lock and the Keeper 5 Disc Lock?
-
The DFS 10 disc lock is made of drop-forged steel for extra strength and has a 10mm diameter pin. The Keeper 5 disc lock is made of hardened steel and has a 5mm diameter pin. It is best used for motor scooters and motorcycles with smaller disc vent holes. Both of these popular 'stapler style' disc locks have a snap-shut mechanism for easy one-handed applications.
|
-
How do I keep my helmet safe when I'm stopped at a restaurant for a bite to eat?
-
Kryptonite has a variety of cable locks to keep helmets, jackets and bags with your motorcycle when you step away. Kryptonite's RCLI, KryptoFlex 1018 Key Cable or even the R4 will prevent a crime of opportunity when someone walks off with your expensive, customized helmet because it is sitting there unprotected.
|
-
I live in the city and need a bicycle lock. What should I choose?
-
Urban areas and college campuses are some of the places where you need to pay extra attention to bicycle security. In the city you should use a heavy-duty chain, like the New York Chain or a top of the line U-lock, like the New York Lock. Two different types of locking methods are recommended when locking in the city - two U-locks or a U-lock and a chain. Properly locking your bicycle is just as important as what you use.
|
-
I live in the suburbs and need a bicycle lock. What should I choose?
-
Unfortunately, thieves live all over and are looking to cut short your riding adventures. You need to lock your bike everywhere, even at home or on a visit to a friend's house. When locking in a low to moderate crime area you should use a U-lock, like the Evolution series 4 Standard, for the best protection. If you are in a low crime area or on the trails, you might want to use a cable to prevent that 'crime of opportunity.
|
-
How much should I spend on a lock?
-
It is suggested that you spend 10% of the total cost of your bike on security. But, what is the bicycle really worth to you? Have you had some of the best journeys of your life on it? Does it provide transportation to and from school or work? Is it your work? Then it very well may mean more than the actual money you paid for it. Take all of that into consideration when purchasing your new lock.
|
-
Do all bicycle locks offer the same amount of security?
-
Not all locks are created equal. Heavy duty chains and U-locks are much more secure than a cable lock. Kryptonite has created a security rating system that will help you determine which lock is best for your needs. Refer to this system when talking with your bicycle dealer about a new lock purchase.

What type of steel is used in Kryptonites U-locks?
-
We use our products every day and want to be free to stop wherever we want to, just like you, so we use only the best materials. Since Kryptonite created the first U-lock in 1971, we have been researching and developing the strongest materials available for all of our locks. The KryptoLok series 2 family is made with Performance steel, which is a hardened high carbon steel. The Evolution series 4 and New York series locks contain a proprietary material called MAX-Performance steel. This is our own special composite steel that is even stronger than that used in the KryptoLok series 2. The strength behind our locks is a combination of our materials, processes and innovative design. This ensures that we all can always enjoy our ride.

What locks can be broken with freon or any other freezing materials? How long will it take and how much will it take?
-
This is one of the most common misconceptions that there is about how to defeat a Kryptonite lock. We hear many accounts of this type of attack, but this is more because people are intrigued by the "James Bond" aspect of it all. But, freon is a highly controlled substance that is harder to get than most illegal drugs. That is not to say that freezing will not break a lock, but it would require a very controlled situation. If you get steel cold enough, it does become very brittle, but it is very difficult to make this happen, especially on the streets.

What is the Kryptonite Security Rating system?
-
This is our own comparison system that ranks the varying levels of security offered by our range of products. We hope this system will help you to choose the best lock for your needs. Its a 12-point system with 1 being simple, deterrent security and 12 being extreme security. If you live in the 'burbs and have a Rottweiler next to your bike or motorcycle, well, maybe a lock rated a 1 is all you need. But, if you live in the middle of a city you want extreme protection; a Kryptonite lock with a rating of 12.

I dont see any information on the Voluntary Lock Exchange Program any longer. I have a tubular cylinder lock that I want to exchange. How do I do this?
-
Kryptonite offered the Voluntary Lock Exchange Program for over a year and replaced more than 400,000 locks worldwide for free. However, we are no longer taking new registrations for this program.
